For more than 75 years, Bruce Wayne’s trusted sidekick was well, a ‘Dick’. Yes, he outgrew the Robin mantle and became Nightwing, Dick Grayson was in Batman’s orbit, and he has been called Dick Grayson always. That was his name but this change with the upcoming Nightwing #51. In a preview that had been posted by ComicsBeat, DC Comics has confirmed that the name will be changed from Dick Grayson to Ric Grayson.
This change will come as a result of the character’s amnesia, that had been brought by a non-fatal bullet to his head in the issue, Batman #55. Without memories, Ric does not feel connected to the mantle of Nightwing, and he then burns down his hideout. Although he is interested in fighting crime, he does not want to wear the black and blue spandex.
This is classic comic book stuff and soft reboots are very common, and marks the arrival of an all-new creative team comprising of FabianNicieza, Scott Lobdell, Garry Brown and Travis Moore.
It is safe to assume that the fans will see Grayson in a black and blue again. This news comes only a few weeks after a comic that featured Bruce Wayne’s dick (oh, maybe this was the reason for the change in name) hit the stands and had been censored in reprints.
